The Delta State Taskforce On Environment on Friday warned traders in Warri metropolis to desist from the habit of displaying their wares on the road for sale or any illegal activities causing traffic gridlock and other environmental nuisance
Recall that the taskforce chairman, Honorable Sylvester Oromoni had earlier warned against trading on walkways, ontop drainages and government spaces
According to him' it has become a norm in Delta, people display their wares anywhere they like or see available space, even major roads has been turned to market place not minding if it is a threat to their lives
He said, the activities of the traders who are in such habit had reached a level which the state government could no longer condone hence the warning
Futher he said 'We have sensitized and appealed to the roadside traders to desist from displaying their goods on the road and on the walkways but it has fallen on deaf ears
Their selfish actions has lead to obstruction of movement of persons and vehicles, they disturb other road users with their activities on the road
He said, aside causing avoidable and needless traffic, the traders were also in the habit of dumping their refuse on the road.
We have a lot of filth on the road because the traders just dump their refuse on the road and in drainages thereby causing environmental and health hazards.
We do not want that anymore. Any illegal trading activities that are blocking the road and constituting menace to others should stop forthwith
Also; they expose themselves to danger because it may lead to death when hit by a vehicle or when an accident occur
